What is a car windshield?

A term with which the front glass of the vehicles is indicated.

Was created with the purpose of protecting the driver and passengers of the first cars from wind and dust,

which were almost all of the bare type.

Modern windshields, in addition to being stratified,

are often built with athermal glass or even with the colored top to reduce glare; other times, they incorporate the radio antenna directly between the inner and outer layers.

Experimentally, a windshield has been constructed in which the intermediate layer can conduct electrical energy and also functions as a defogger.

Now, how you know what is a car windshield you can know different types of windshields that exist.

Did you get a cracked windshield? We have a very interesting post talking about what to do in our blog

Different types of windshield glass

Exist three types of windshields that you can select:

  • The Dealer Glass
  • The Aftermarket Glass
  • (OEM) The Original Equipment Manufacturer Glass

Let’s define and establish differences between them

The Dealer Glass

This type of windshield authorized by a dealer authorized by the original manufacturer of the vehicle,

so it can be said that they come from the same site.

The only difference is that instead of selling the product, the manufacturer of the original equipment is sold by a specialized store.

The Aftermarket Glass

Aftermarket glass is a type of windshield manufactured by a company outside the manufacturer of the original equipment.

These types of windshield can’t be identical as OEM because there are copyright laws but those can be very high quality with small differences between OEM.

It should be noted that there are debates by industrialist professionals who talk about the quality of this type of windshield that can sometimes be less than an OEM windshield.

This type of windshield is usually a little cheaper than those manufactured by OEMs,

you must be very careful when buying one of these products making sure you buy a certified and quality product.

The Original Equipment Manufacturer Glass (OEM)

Between the types of windshield glass,

exist the OEM that comes from the same manufacturer where your car came from,

this type of windshield has the advantage that the same to the original glass and has a certificate of quality and safety.

The disadvantage is that they can be up to 60% more expensive than an aftermarket windshield.

What type of glass is used in windshields??

Laminated glass

Laminated glass (Or security glass) is a glass specially designed for the protection and safety of the driver of the vehicle at all times,

this type of glass has a safety system created to prevent the windshield from exploding at the time of a strong blow to it.

We will explain well how that system works next.

Tempered glass is two tempered glass joined by an intermediate sheet composed of a transparent polymer

This type of windshield has two slopes,

one of them is that the glass laminate is very very hard, this ability comes from tempered glass in your design,

In addition, another property that I said earlier is that it is anti-impact.

This means that if you get to receive a very strong blow the glass does not reach break from the whole if not that presents flexibility and does not break.

The last quite interesting property is that it can control the passage of lightning ultraviolet.

It should be noted that for some years it is mandatory to use laminated glass in cars in some western countries since this type of windshield represents a safety measure very important.

Tempered glass

Tempered glass is a safety windshield that is created through special chemical or thermal treatments to develop a resistance quite different from that of a normal glass.

This special design makes when the glass receives a powerful impact and manages to break the glass, it breaks into fractions of several pieces instead of splintering completely.

Thanks to this feature, glass can become very dangerous for the passengers of the vehicle, for this reason, these windshields have been banned in some countries for safety reasons.

This type of windshield is mostly used inside windows and bodies and has a temperature resistance of up to 250ºC.
